  • Web agency in Belgium: what it does, what it costs, how to choose one

    TL;DR

    • "Web agency" is a catch-all term covering five different trades: design, development, search, advertising and data. No agency masters all five equally — so the first question to ask is "which one is your actual craft?".
    • In Belgium, a professional brochure site generally lands between €2,500 and €8,000 excl. VAT, an e-commerce site between €8,000 and €25,000. Below €1,500 you are not buying a website: you are renting a template.
    • A site delivered without conversion tracking, a technical SEO foundation and a written transfer of ownership is a site you will have to redo. Those three points are the ones Belgian quotes most often omit.
    • Agency, freelancer or self-service platform: the right choice depends less on budget than on who will maintain the site two years from now.
    • At Nexuro: €80/h excl. VAT, you keep ownership of the site and the domain name, and the site is connected to your Odoo CRM/ERP so every enquiry is traceable through to revenue.

Searching for a "web agency" in Belgium means running into hundreds of providers promising the same thing in the same words: bespoke, responsive, SEO-optimised, conversion-focused. The problem is not a lack of supply — it is that nothing is comparable.

Here is a practical framework: what the term actually covers, what a website must contain if it is not to be redone within two years, what it costs in Belgium, and the questions that make the difference when it is time to sign.

"Web agency": five trades under one label

A web agency designs, builds and launches websites — but in practice the label covers five distinct specialities that few firms genuinely master all at once.

TradeWhat it producesThe sign an agency truly does it
Design / UXMockups, identity, user journeysIt shows you designs before writing code, and argues its choices
DevelopmentThe site itself and its integrationsIt talks hosting, performance, backups, updates
Search (SEO)Durable visibility on GoogleIt talks URL structure, tags and content, not "we will optimise later"
Advertising (SEA / social)Immediate paid trafficIt reasons in cost per enquiry, not in number of clicks
Data / trackingMeasurement of what worksIt installs conversion tracking and shows you it working

An agency that ticks all five boxes at the same depth is rare. That is fine: what matters is that it knows where its competence stops. An excellent design agency that subcontracts SEO and says so is worth more than one claiming to do everything and botching four areas out of five.

What a professional website must contain (and what many quotes leave out)

Seven elements separate a site that works for you from an online brochure. Check them in the quote, not after delivery.

    1. A technical SEO foundation. Clean URL structure, title tags and meta descriptions written page by page, a coherent heading hierarchy, a sitemap, controlled load times. This costs a hundred times less during the build than after it.
    2. Conversion tracking. Knowing how many forms, calls and quote requests the site genuinely generates. Without it, you will never know whether your investment achieved anything. Our guide: measuring your marketing's real ROI.
    3. GDPR compliance. A functioning consent banner — meaning one that genuinely blocks trackers before acceptance — a privacy policy and legal notices.
    4. Accessibility. Contrast, keyboard navigation, alternative text. Beyond the moral obligation, European accessibility rules are becoming a regulatory matter for a growing number of organisations.
    5. Content written for your customers, not filler translated from a template. It is the most underestimated line item in Belgian web projects.
    6. Editorial autonomy. You must be able to change a text, add a page or publish an article without triggering an invoice.
    7. A written transfer of ownership. Domain name, hosting, administrator access, content: all of it in your name. We come back to this below — it is trap number one.

What does a web agency cost in Belgium?

For a professional SME brochure site, observed Belgian ranges run from €2,500 to €8,000 excl. VAT; an e-commerce site starts closer to €8,000 to €25,000 depending on the catalogue and integrations. Those figures cover design, development, content integration and launch.

We surveyed and broke down these ranges from published offers by Belgian providers in how much a website costs in Belgium, and set out the stages of a project in building a website for your SMB.

Three items almost always come on top of the initial quote, and are better anticipated:

    • Copywriting (often €500 to €2,500 if you do not supply the content).
    • Hosting and maintenance: security patches, updates, backups. Budget an annual figure, not zero.
    • Acquisition: a site with neither SEO nor advertising does not receive visitors by magic. It is the most common disappointment six months after launch.

On fees themselves, two models dominate: the fixed project price (readable, but it pushes an agency to limit revisions) and the hourly rate (verifiable, but it demands discipline). At Nexuro it is €80/h excl. VAT, itemised — with a free initial audit.

    Agency, freelancer or self-service platform?

The right criterion is not the entry price, it is continuity: who will look after your site in two years, when you want to add a page, patch a vulnerability or plug in a tool.

A simple rule of thumb: if your site is an acquisition channel (it has to generate enquiries), an agency is justified. If it is a business card nobody searches for on Google, something lighter is plenty.

The 8 questions to ask before signing

    1. Who owns the domain name, the hosting and the code? The answer must be "you", in writing.
    2. Can I edit a page myself? Ask for a live demonstration of the editing interface.
    3. What happens if we stop working together? Insist on the full site handover procedure.
    4. Is conversion tracking included, and who verifies it?
    5. Who writes the content, and is it priced in the quote?
    6. What exactly does maintenance cover, at what price, and with what response time?
    7. How will we measure whether the site succeeded? A serious agency proposes indicators before starting.
    8. May I speak to two of your clients, including one in my sector?

The red flags, conversely: a quote with no itemisation, a promise of "first place on Google" (nobody can guarantee it), a price far below market with no explanation, a contract that keeps the domain name in the agency's name, and a complete absence of questions about your business at the first meeting. An agency that does not seek to understand your trade cannot write for your customers.

After launch: half the work begins

A website is not a deliverable, it is a starting point. On launch day you have a shop window nobody knows about. Three workstreams determine what it will return:

    • Organic search, to capture your customers' searches over time. Our starting guide: SEO in Belgium, where to start.
    • Local SEO, if your customer base is geographic: Google Business Profile, local pages, reviews. See local SEO in Belgium.
    • Visibility inside AI (GEO): a growing share of searches now ends in an assistant's answer rather than on a link. Generative engines cite sources — but you have to be structured to be one. See SEO vs GEO.

It is also why we systematically connect the site to a CRM: an incoming enquiry must be traceable through to the signed quote, otherwise you are steering on gut feeling.

    FAQ

What does a web agency charge in Belgium?

For a professional SME brochure site, ranges observed in Belgium run from €2,500 to €8,000 excl. VAT; an e-commerce site starts closer to €8,000 to €25,000 depending on the catalogue and integrations. On top of that come copywriting, hosting and annual maintenance. Some agencies charge a fixed project price, others bill time spent — at Nexuro it is €80/h excl. VAT with the work itemised.

What exactly does a web agency do?

A web agency designs, builds and launches websites, but its real scope varies a great deal from one firm to another. The common core covers design and user experience, development and hosting, the technical SEO foundation, content integration and launch. Some agencies add ongoing search optimisation, online advertising, conversion measurement and connection to a CRM.

Web agency or freelancer: which should I choose?

A freelancer suits a targeted need, when you steer the project yourself and accept the risk of unavailability. An agency is justified as soon as the site is a genuine acquisition channel and several trades have to be coordinated — design, development, search, measurement — with contractual continuity of service. The deciding factor is not the entry price but maintenance two years out.

How long does it take to build a website?

Plan four to eight weeks for an SME brochure site, and two to four months for an e-commerce site or a project with integrations. What stretches timelines is almost never technical: it is the supply of content and the client-side approval loops. Preparing texts, photographs and decisions upfront shortens a project by several weeks.

Do I really own the website?

That depends on what your contract says, and it is the most common trap in the market. Domain name, hosting, administrator access, content and, depending on the case, the code should all be registered in your name. Check it before signing: a domain registered in the agency's name turns a change of provider into a negotiation.

Does a web agency also handle SEO?

Some do, some do not — and many stop at the technical foundation shipped with the site. These are two distinct services: building a well-structured site does not make it climb Google on its own. Ask explicitly what is included at delivery and what belongs to a later SEO engagement, together with the indicators used to track it.

Do I need to rebuild my site to improve its search ranking?

Rarely. In most cases an audit shows the problems come from content, page structure or metadata — all fixable on the existing site at a fraction of the cost of a rebuild. A rebuild is warranted when the technology genuinely blocks progress (structural slowness, a non-responsive site, an abandoned CMS) or when the site does not convert.
