  • SEO agency in Brussels: winning on Belgium's most competitive market
  • SEO agency in Brussels: winning on Belgium's most competitive market

    TL;DR

    • Brussels is the Belgian market where search costs the most and returns the most: a high density of businesses, agencies established for fifteen to twenty years, and a local pack contested across 19 communes.
    • The specificity that changes everything: FR/NL bilingualism. A French-only site cuts itself off from part of the demand and leaves an empty space to Dutch-speaking competitors.
    • On a Brussels query, the battle is fought first in the local pack (the three listings under the map), not in the blue links. The Google Business Profile listing often weighs more than the homepage.
    • In Brussels, aiming at the broadest keyword ("lawyer Brussels") is almost always a budgeting mistake: commune plus speciality granularity pays off faster.
    • At Nexuro: a free audit, €80/h excl. VAT, and hands-on experience of bilingual FR/NL search — see our case study Coverit.

Brussels concentrates the country's highest number of businesses per square kilometre — and, mechanically, the highest number of competitors on every query. It is the market where an SEO agency is most useful, and also the one where empty promises cost the most.

Here is what genuinely sets Brussels search apart from the rest of Belgium, and the method that works for an SME without twenty years of domain history.

    What makes Brussels different

Three characteristics make Brussels search more demanding than anywhere else in Belgium: bilingualism, communal fragmentation, and long-established competition.

    1. FR/NL bilingualism. The same service is searched for in French and in Dutch, often by different audiences within the same city. Treating Brussels as a monolingual market means ignoring a substantial share of demand. Technically, it requires genuine pages per language (not machine translation), correct hreflang tags, and keywords researched separately in each language — intents and phrasings do not overlap.

    2. Nineteen communes. "Brussels" is not one city in your customers' minds: it is Ixelles, Uccle, Schaerbeek, Saint-Gilles, Woluwe, Anderlecht, Etterbeek. Searches happen at that granularity, and so does the local pack. A business based in Uccle stands a far better chance of surfacing on "[trade] Uccle" than on "[trade] Brussels".

    3. Old, well-equipped competition. On generic Brussels queries you are facing sites with fifteen years of accumulated age, links and content, plus the directories and comparison platforms occupying the top positions. It is doable, but not in three months and not on the broadest term.

The local pack: the real first page in Brussels

On a locally-intended search, Google displays three business listings under a map — the local pack — before the classic results. In Brussels, appearing there is worth more than the first organic position.

Local pack ranking officially rests on three factors: relevance (does your listing match the search), distance (between the searcher and your premises) and prominence (your online reputation, reviews included).

What that means in practice, and what most Brussels businesses neglect:

    • A complete Google Business Profile: exact primary category, detailed services, up-to-date opening hours, recent photographs, service area.
    • Regular reviews, with replies. The rhythm counts as much as the number.
    • Strict consistency of name, address and phone number everywhere your business is listed.
    • A listing filled in in both languages if your customer base is bilingual.

The full checklist is in Google Business Profile: how to optimise your listing, and the logic of local search in local SEO in Belgium.

The strategy that works: aim narrow before aiming wide

In Brussels, the broad query is a trap: it is expensive, slow to win, and often less qualified than the precise one. "Accountant Brussels" puts you up against the whole sector; "accountant for freelancers in Ixelles" puts you in front of customers who already know what they want.

    The method, in order:

    1. Map demand in both languages. Volumes, intents, FR and NL phrasings. It is the one step that prevents building six months of content on queries that do not exist.
    2. Choose an angle of speciality, not a generic trade. Search rewards depth on one subject, not shallow coverage of ten.
    3. Build pages commune by commune — only for those you genuinely serve, with content specific to each. Cloned local pages have fooled nobody for years.
    4. Work the local pack in parallel, because it produces results far faster than pure organic.
    5. Measure in enquiries, not positions. A third position on a query that brings no calls is worth nothing.

On timelines, to be precise: a few weeks to move on the local pack and long-tail queries, six to twelve months to weigh on a contested Brussels query. The breakdown by query type is in how long SEO takes to rank.

What does search cost in Brussels?

Rates are not specific to Brussels — what increases is the intensity of work required, because competition is stronger and the market bilingual. SME search engagements in Belgium generally run from a few hundred to a few thousand euros a month depending on objectives; the models and their logic are set out in how much SEO costs in Belgium.

Two items specifically inflate in Brussels:

    • Linguistic doubling: producing and maintaining genuinely bilingual content costs more than a monolingual site — but opens up demand your French-speaking competitors ignore.
    • Content production, because you do not differentiate yourself from a competitor established for fifteen years with three service pages.

At Nexuro the principle is the same everywhere: €80/h excl. VAT, itemised work, and a free initial audit — you know what you are paying for and why.

How to choose an SEO agency in Brussels

The general criteria for selecting an agency are set out in how to choose an SEO agency in Belgium. Four additional questions matter on the Brussels market:

    1. Have you run FR/NL search before? Ask for a concrete example, including hreflang handling and Dutch-language keyword research.
    2. How do you handle the local pack across several communes? A generic answer about "the Google listing" is enough to disqualify.
    3. Which precise queries are you targeting, and why those? An agency aiming straight at the broadest term is selling a dream.
    4. What happens if we stop? Content, access and data must remain yours.

    What we do at Nexuro

We work with Brussels and Walloon SMEs across the full chain: organic search, website, advertising and connection to Odoo so every enquiry is traceable through to revenue. On the bilingual side, our Coverit case study details SEO and GEO work carried out in French and Dutch.

We are also one of the few Belgian agencies treating GEO — visibility inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews — as a discipline in its own right, and measuring it. Our study: The state of GEO in Belgium 2026.

If your site is already live, start by knowing where you stand: we run a free audit — current positions, Brussels competitors, priorities for the next three months. See also our SEO agency in Belgium page and, for the website side, web agency in Brussels.

We also work across Wallonia, in Namur and Liège in particular.

    FAQ

What does an SEO agency cost in Brussels?

Rates charged in Brussels are Belgian market rates — from a few hundred to a few thousand euros a month depending on objectives — but the volume of work required is higher than in the provinces, because of competition and bilingualism. At Nexuro, billing is hourly and transparent: €80/h excl. VAT, with itemised work and a free initial audit.

Do you need a French and Dutch site to rank in Brussels?

It depends on your customer base, but in most Brussels sectors the answer is yes. A real share of demand is expressed in Dutch, and a monolingual site leaves that ground to competitors. One caveat, though: machine translation is not enough. You need genuine pages per language, correct hreflang tags and keyword research carried out separately in each language.

How long does it take to become visible on Google in Brussels?

Expect a few weeks to progress on the local pack and long-tail queries, and six to twelve months to weigh on a generic, contested Brussels query. The deciding factor is not the city but the competition on the query targeted: "[trade] Uccle" is won far faster than "[trade] Brussels".

Should I target "Brussels" or the name of my commune?

Start with your commune and the ones bordering it. Local searches are mostly carried out at that granularity, competition is weaker, and the local pack favours you there through geographic proximity. The "Brussels" query is won afterwards, once local authority is built.

Is the local pack more important than classic search in Brussels?

For a business that receives customers or travels to them, yes: the three listings shown under the map capture a large share of clicks on local searches, ahead of organic results. The two reinforce each other in any case, since a well-ranked site feeds the prominence Google takes into account when ranking listings.

Can an SEO agency also rebuild my website?

Yes, and it is often more effective than splitting the two engagements: the site's structure, content and performance directly condition what search can produce. At Nexuro we design the website, the search work and the Odoo CRM connection as a single system, so every enquiry is traceable through to the signed quote.
