  • SEO in Belgium: where to start (the practical guide)

    TL;DR,

    • SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) covers all the actions that make your site appear in Google's unpaid results. For a Belgian SME, it is the most cost-effective acquisition channel in the long run: you pay for each click exactly zero times.
    • It rests on 3 pillars: technical (can Google read your site?), content (do you answer your clients' questions?) and authority (do other sites link to you?).
    • Where to start: check that your pages are indexed write content that answers real questions, add structured data (Schema.org) then measure.
    • SEO isn't going away, it evolves. Your clients now ask their questions to ChatGPT and Perplexity too: that's GEO the natural next step beyond SEO (separate linked article).

You have a website. It looks great, it works. But when a client types into Google the very service you sell, it's a competitor who appears, not you. Frustrating, and costly: every position you don't hold, someone else holds in your place.

The good news is that SEO is not a black box reserved for experts. It is a structured discipline with clear foundations. And as with everything at Nexuro, the principle is straightforward: we don't fly on intuition, we build a system.

Here is the starting guide we give to a Belgian SME director who wants to finally understand where to begin.

    What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) encompasses all the techniques that improve your site's position in the unpaid results of Google, Bing, and other search engines. "Natural" is contrasted here with "paid": you don't pay Google to appear, you earn it through the quality and structure of your site.

The difference with SEA (paid advertising) is clear: with SEA, traffic stops the day you cut the budget. With SEO, a well-ranked page keeps bringing you clients month after month. It's an investment that compounds, not an expense that evaporates.

For an SME, it is often the best cost-to-result ratio over the long term, provided you build the foundations in the right order.

What are the pillars of SEO?

SEO is not a trick; it is a balance between three pillars. If one is missing, the other two are not enough. Here is how they fit together.

    PillarQuestion it answersConcrete examples
Technical SEOCan Google crawl and read my site?Indexation, page speed, mobile version, sitemap, clean tags, structured data (Schema.org)
On-page SEO (content)Does my site answer my clients' questions? Keywords, headings (H1/H2 tags), useful content, page structure, internal linking
Off-page SEO (authority)Do other sites consider me credible?Backlinks (inbound links), citations, local presence (Google Business Profile), reviews

Most SMEs rush to produce content while neglecting the technical side. That's a mistake: if Google cannot crawl your pages or they are not indexed the finest content in the world remains invisible. Always start by checking the foundations.

Step 1, Are your pages indexed by Google?

This is the starting point, and the one everyone skips. A non-indexed page does not exist for Google: it cannot appear in any result, regardless of its content.

    Two concepts to distinguish:

    • Crawling: Google's bots travel across your site by following links.
    • Indexation: Google decides whether (or not) to add your pages to its results database.

The simplest test: type site:yourdomain.be into Google. The number of results shown gives you an idea of the pages Google knows about. For a precise diagnosis, Google Search Console (free) tells you exactly which pages are indexed, which are excluded, and why.

Watch out for the opposite trap: some pages must stay out of the index (shopping cart, private areas, thank-you pages, duplicates). Mastering de-indexation knowing what Google should ignore, is just as important as indexation. A clean site is a site that shows Google only what deserves to be found.

Step 2, Does your content answer your clients' real questions?

Once your pages are readable, it's time to focus on content. The rule is simple: Google rewards pages that best match the search intent of the user. Your job is not to "write for Google", but to answer clearly what your client is genuinely looking for.

    In practice:

    1. List the questions your clients ask (on the phone, in meetings, by email). Those are your keywords.
    2. One page = one intent. Don't mix ten subjects on a single page: create a dedicated page for each important question.
    3. Structure it: a clear heading (H1), sub-headings (H2) that echo the questions, direct answers at the start of each paragraph.
    4. Link your pages to one another: connect your content with relevant internal links to guide the reader, and Google.

Content that genuinely helps ranks durably. Content written "for SEO", stuffed with keywords and hollow in substance, fools no one any more, neither your clients nor Google.

Step 3, Have you added structured data (Schema.org)?

This is the technical step that makes the difference, and one that 90% of SMEs ignore. Structured data (Schema.org) is invisible code that explains to Google the exact nature of your content: "this is a business", "this is a 5-star client review", "this is a FAQ", "this is a product at such-and-such a price".

Why does it matter? Because this markup enables rich results: review stars, expandable FAQs, a product price shown directly in Google. These displays catch the eye and increase your click-through rate at the same ranking position.

For a Belgian SME, the priority markups are:

    • LocalBusiness / Organization who you are, where you are, your contact details.
    • FAQPage your recurring questions and answers.
    • Product / Review for e-commerce and social proof.

This is exactly the kind of clean technical plumbing we work on every day: invisible to the visitor, decisive for the machine that reads your site.

Step 4, How do you measure whether your SEO is working?

At Nexuro, we hold one firm conviction: what isn't measured can't be managed. SEO is no exception. No need to guess, install two free tools and watch the right indicators.

    • Google Search Console: your queries, your positions, your indexed pages, your clicks from Google. This is your SEO dashboard.
    • Google Analytics (GA4): what visitors do once they arrive, and, above all, whether they convert (quote request, purchase, contact).

The classic pitfall is to celebrate a traffic spike that generates zero sales. As we keep saying: the goal is not more traffic, it's the right traffic. Only one metric truly counts: is SEO bringing you clients, yes or no?

Where does GEO fit in? Is SEO still enough?

SEO remains indispensable. But it evolves and you need to know that before building your strategy.

Increasingly, your clients no longer type their question into Google, they ask it to ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity. And these tools don't return ten links, they return a written answer with two or three cited sources. The new question is no longer just "am I well ranked on Google?", but "am I the source the AI cites?".

This is what we call GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation and it is our pioneering territory in Belgium. Good news: it isn't "SEO versus GEO". Strong SEO content (clear, structured, marked up, well-sourced) is also an excellent starting point for GEO. You add a layer, you don't start from scratch.

If you want to understand this evolution in detail, we've written a full article on it: GEO: how to get cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity in 2026.

    Where to start, concretely?

You don't need to do everything at once. Start small, but start, in the right order:

    1. Check indexation: open Google Search Console and verify which pages are (or aren't) in the index.
    2. List your clients' questions and create a dedicated page for each important intent.
    3. Nail the structure: a clear H1, H2 sub-headings phrased as questions, direct answers, internal linking.
    4. Add structured data (Schema.org) to your key pages.
    5. Measure in Search Console + GA4, and look at conversions, not just traffic.
    6. Think ahead: prepare your content to be cited by AI tools too (GEO).

SEO is neither magic nor instant. It is a foundation built brick by brick. But once laid, it works for you, without paying for each click.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) covers all the actions that make your site appear in Google's unpaid results. You don't pay for each click: you earn your position through the technical quality, content, and authority of your site. For a Belgian SME, it is the most cost-effective acquisition channel over the long term.

What is the difference between SEO and SEA?

SEO positions you in Google's organic results: the effect is slow to build but lasting. SEA (Google Ads) buys paid placements: the effect is immediate but stops the day you cut the budget. SEO compounds over time; SEA is a tap. The two are complementary, not opposites.

How long does it take to see SEO results?

Generally allow 3 to 6 months to see meaningful results, sometimes longer depending on your competition and the starting state of your site. SEO is neither magic nor instant: it is a foundation built brick by brick. But once laid, it brings you clients month after month, without paying for each click.

SEO or SEA: which should I start with?

It depends on your time horizon. Need leads now? SEA delivers immediate visibility. Building a lasting asset? SEO is more cost-effective over time. Our conviction at Nexuro: the right mix is decided on data, never on intuition. We measure what actually converts into clients, then allocate the budget accordingly.

How do I know whether my site is indexed on Google?

Type site:yourdomain.be into Google: the number of results shown gives you a first idea of the pages Google knows about. For a precise diagnosis, open Google Search Console (free): it tells you exactly which pages are indexed, which are excluded, and why. A non-indexed page does not exist for Google.
