  • GEO: how to get cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity in 2026
  • GEO: how to get cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity in 2026

    TL;DR,

    • The GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the art of being cited as a source by generative AI engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity), where SEO once aimed at ranking well on Google.
    • Why now: AI already handles 12 to 18 % of informational searches, and ChatGPT has ~800 million weekly users. The pioneer window is closing.
    • How to do it: write to be cited. Lead with a TL;DR, use Q→A sections, add structured data (Schema), show freshness with a date, demonstrate authority with a byline, and keep sentences short enough for an AI to quote verbatim.
    • Living proof: our first French client found us via ChatGPT not via Google. GEO is not a theory, it is already an acquisition channel.

You need an answer. Not long ago, you would type your question into Google and scroll through ten blue links. Today, you ask ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity, and you get a single response already written, with two or three sources cited below it.

The question for your business is no longer “am I first on Google?”. It has become: “am I the source the AI cites?”

That is exactly what GEO, Generative Engine Optimization covers. At Nexuro, it is our pioneering territory in Belgium. Here is what it is, why you need to act now, and how to do it in practice.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the set of techniques that make your content visible and citable by generative response engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. Where SEO optimises for a page ranking, GEO optimises for being synthesised and cited within a response written by an AI.

In other words: SEO helps you appear in a list of links. GEO helps you become the sentence the AI reproduces when a business leader asks it “which agency should I use to structure my digital marketing in Belgium?”.

This is a fundamental shift. The goal is no longer to win a click, it is to win a citation.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO and GEO share the same foundation, quality content, technically clean, but they are not aiming at the same target. SEO optimises for a ranking algorithm; GEO optimises for a language model that writes a response.

    SEO (traditional search)GEO (AI search)
TargetGoogle, Bing (link engines)ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity (response engines)
ObjectiveRank well (ten blue links)Be cited as a source in the response
Unit of successThe click to your siteThe citation of your brand
Winning formatLong page, keyword-optimisedShort, self-contained, citable responses
Key signalBacklinks, domain authorityClarity, Q&A structure, freshness, sources
MeasurementPosition, organic trafficCitation share, brand mentions within AI

The good news: it is not “SEO versus GEO”. Content designed for GEO remains excellent for SEO. You are not starting from scratch, you are adding a layer of structure and clarity to what you are already doing.

    Why act now?

Because the shift is already under way, and it is accelerating.

ChatGPT has approximately 800 million active users per week and Perplexity processes around 780 million queries per month. By early 2026, AI is already handling 12 to 18 % of informational searches. This is no longer a weak signal: it is a fully-fledged discovery channel.

And here is the point most business leaders miss: being present today costs less than waiting. Once all your competitors are optimised for AI, becoming the cited source will be a battle. Right now, in many sectors in Belgium, the ground is still wide open. The pioneer window is closing, make the most of it while it remains.

At Nexuro, we hold a simple conviction: you do not steer your marketing on gut feeling, you steer it by data. And the data clearly shows that search is moving towards generative AI. Waiting means letting a competitor take your place.

How to optimise concretely for ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity?

Here is the method we apply. To be cited by an AI, write content an AI can quote without rewriting it: clear, structured, self-contained and sourced. Six practical tactics.

    1. Lead with a TL;DR. Three to four bullet points summarising the response, right after the title. Generative models love these synthesis blocks: they find a ready-to-cite answer there. (You have one at the top of this article, that is no accident.)

    2. Structure as questions → answers. Your subheadings should be real questions your clients ask (“What is GEO?”, “How is it different from SEO?”). And each answer must be self-contained: understandable even out of context. That is precisely how an AI picks a sentence to respond to a user.

    3. Add structured data (Schema). Schema.org markup (FAQPage, Article, Organization, author, datePublished) helps engines understand the nature of your content, the author and the date. It is technical plumbing, exactly the kind of clean tracking and structure we work on every day.

    4. Display freshness. Show a publication date and an update date visibly. Perplexity, in particular, favours fresh and sourced content. A dated, maintained article is judged more reliable than text without any temporal marker.

    5. Demonstrate authority. Sign your content (real author, expertise, role), cite your sources, back your claims with concrete figures rather than adjectives. ChatGPT favours encyclopaedic, authoritative content; a brand that proves its claims is more citable than one that merely boasts.

    6. Think “claim + proof”. State a clear assertion, then back it up immediately (figure, example, source). Models extract these claim/proof pairs to build their responses. Golden rule: publish more clearly, not more lengthily.

Does it actually work? Our proof.

Yes. And we have the most direct proof there is.

Our very first French client found us via ChatGPT. Not via Google, not via an advert, not via a recommendation. He asked a generative AI his question, and Nexuro came up in the response. A Belgian agency, cited by an AI, to a French prospect who had never heard of us.

That day, GEO stopped being a subject for our watch report and became a real acquisition channel. That is also why we speak about it with such conviction: we are not selling a theoretical promise, we are telling you what we experienced, and what we now build for our clients.

    Where to start?

You do not need to rebuild everything. Start small, but start:

    1. Identify the questions your clients are genuinely asking about your field.
    2. Rewrite one piece of content in Q→A format, with a TL;DR and self-contained answers.
    3. Date and sign it: author, publication date, update date.
    4. Add Schema markup so that engines understand your page.
    5. Measure: track whether your brand starts being cited in ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity.

GEO is not a fad. It is the logical next step after SEO, in an age where your clients ask their questions to an AI before they open Google.

Want to know whether your business is already visible, or invisible, in ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity? We can look at that together, simply, during a free audit of your digital ecosystem. No bots, no sales team: Timothy or Bryan replies within 24h.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of techniques that make your content visible and citable by generative response engines such as ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity. Where SEO optimises a page ranking, GEO optimises for being synthesised and cited within a response written by an AI. The goal is no longer a click, but a citation.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO optimises for a ranking algorithm: appearing high up in a list of links. GEO optimises for a language model that writes a response: being cited as a source. It is not one versus the other, content designed for GEO remains excellent for SEO. You are adding a layer of structure and clarity, without starting from scratch.

How do I get visible on ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity?

Write content an AI can quote without rewriting it: clear, structured, self-contained and sourced. In practice: a TL;DR at the top, subheadings phrased as questions with self-contained answers, structured data (Schema), visible publication and update dates, a signed author and concrete figures. Golden rule: publish more clearly, not more lengthily.

Why should I start with GEO now?

In many sectors in Belgium, the ground is still wide open. Being present today costs less than waiting until all your competitors are optimised.

    Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO is the logical next step after SEO, not its replacement. Both share the same foundation: quality content, technically clean. You are not rebuilding anything, you are adding a layer of structure (Q→A, Schema, freshness, authority) to what you are already doing. Well-crafted content serves both objectives at once.
